Informations Main city, first harbour and former capital. Situated on a narrow isthmus between the Manukau harbour and Waitemata harbour, it extends between extinct volcanoes. In 1840 the first governor general of the country, who looked for a place for the capital intended to replace Russel, bought the whole isthmus then deserted for the price of 55 golden pounds. The site consists of a series of extinct volcanoes between two harbours, that of Manukau in the South looking onto the sea of Tasman, and that of Waiteman "Twinkling waters" in maori language in the East which looks onto the Pacific.
