Beginner or false beginner |
You have no knowledge of the language, or you have only some words or sentences learnt certain time ago already. You write, read or understand that very briefly, and what is made is with numerous errors. You make a literal translation of your own language.

Elementary |
You understand 50 % of the usual conversations expressed clearly and slowly. Your vocabulary remains however limited enough. You know certain grammatical, spelling, syntactical points and of pronunciation. You often appeal to a dictionary. You still think in your language before translating.

Lower Intermediate |
Your syntax is good but you still make errors. You still draft with difficulties. Your vocabulary, although limited, allows you to understand 60 % of the conversations of the common life expressed in a normal way. You continue to think in your own language before translating.

Intermediate |
You read and write without any trouble in spite of errors. The idioms of the language are not easy matter for you. You are understood without too much difficulty. You still feel difficulties drafting. You understand now thanks to a vocabulary more enriched conversations on less commonplace subjects. You tend to think still in your language.

Upper
Intermediate |
To read and to write are now made with a certain ease but the mastery is not completed. Your vocabulary is rather vast but certain subjects escape you for lack of a precise vocabulary. Your mother tongue begins to become blurred in your way of thinking to give way to the learnt language.

Superior |
You read and usually write, but you still make errors in the purely idiomatic expressions. Your pronunciation is good. You resort to the dictionary for the more technical or less usual words. You still think of 15 % in your mother tongue.

Advanced |
You master the new language. To read, to write and to speak are not any more a problem. You do not think any more in your mother tongue. However certain tears can be made on highly-specialized fields of the language, on not yet assimilated technical or scientific vocabulary.

Excellent |
You are made almost perfectly bilingual. Some small errors can arise but they are rare. Your communication is completed. You miss however the speed of pronunciation. A vaster vocabulary on certain precise subjects will make you comfortable. The bilingualism is not far for you.
