Town information's Superb medieval city of Tuscany, on the red clay hills of Chianti, to 50 km to the south of Florence, it gave its name to the sienna, brown orchid dye used in painting. independent Republic from the XII to the XVI century this city of merchants and bankers was illustrated by a brilliant civilization which did of it one of the capitals of the Gothic art in Europe. The XII and XIV centuries developed an artistic school in with it (school of sienna). The medieval heritage of the city (university founded into 1247) appears at the time of the popular festivals as that which is held downtown on Piazza del Campo, between teams in XV century old costumes representing the " contrade " (parishes) of the city. Piazza del Campo, in the shape of a Saint-Jacob shell, is one of the most beautiful medieval places in Europe. She is bordered by old houses of which Palazzo Pubblico which surmounts Torre del Mangia, touring 102m. The palace, the town hall and the municipal museum have all beautiful collections of local art. |
