Our greeting families are recruited with great care. The criteria of selection are very rigorous and each family must satisfy a precise schedule of conditions: excellent morality, desire to communicate with their host, satisfactory social standing. We should specify that the families will only speak with you the language of the country where you will be. It is the principle of the immersion courses! Accommodation on the beach |

Capital of the country 1170 m of altitude, erected by the Spanish colonists of the city close to Cartago in 1738. It supplanted the latter in 1823 thanks to its all year pleasant climate (of 14º C to 27º C). It has a beautiful mixture of Hispanic and modern buildings, broad avenues and many parks. At first blush, San José may seem little more than a chaotic jumble of cars, buses, buildings, and people. The central downtown section of San José is an urban planner's nightmare, where once-quiet streets are now burdened by traffic and in a near constant state of gridlock. Leaded fuels and a lack of emission controls have given San José a brown cloud. Below the cloud, the city bustles, but it is not particularly hospitable to travelers. Sidewalks are poorly maintained and claustrophobic, and street crime is a problem. Most visitors quickly seek the sanctuary of their hotel room and the first chance to escape the city. Still, San José is the most cosmopolitan city in Central America. Costa Rica's stable government and the Central Valley's climate have, over the years, attracted people from all over the world. There's a large diplomatic and international business presence here. As a result, there has been the proliferation of small, elegant hotels in renovated historic buildings, as well as a diverse variety of innovative new restaurants serving a wide range of international cuisines. Together, these hotels and restaurants provide visitors with one of the greatest varieties of options found anywhere between Mexico City and Bogotá. If you plan on doing any terrestrial travel (by bus or car) or hope to visit several different destinations while in Costa Rica, San José will invariably serve as a default hub or transfer point (at least until the Liberia airport gets more flights). We'll help you plan your time in the capital and help ease your way through the pitfalls inherent in such a rough-and-tumble little city. click to see pictures
