City information. The state of OAXACA is rural and mountainous. Its villages of altitude shelter the descendants of the zapothèques and Mixtèques and 1/5 of the population speaks only the Indian language. In spite of mining resources like oil, the coal, the money, the copper and of the agricultural resources like the culture of the coffee, it is one of the poorest states of the country. EXCURSIONS: On the weekend, students are provided with the opportunity to experience today´s indigenous culture outside the city of Oaxaca. Weekend tours, led by a bilingual guide, visit archaeological sites, indigenous markets and artisan villages around the central valley of Oaxaca. The tours are optional and are available at an additional cost of US$15 - US$18. Some of the destinations include the following: Monte Albán: The largest archaeological site in the state of Oaxaca, Monte Alban is a Zapotec ceremonial center that experienced its splendor from 200-800 AD. The murals and funerary urns of the tombs found on this site are considered some of the richest art finds in the world.
Mitla: This archaeological site was originally a Zapotec burial ground, but was then conquered by the Mixtecs in 1250 AD. It is renowned for its stone mosaics and Spanish chapel built from stones taken from the Mixtec buildings on the site.
Tlacolula: This village is home to one of the largest indigenous markets in Mexico and is an excellent place to buy artesanias or simply watch Zapotecs make their weekly purchases. In addition to the colorful, bustling market, Tlacolula is famous for its cathedral. Tule: The massive Arbol de Tule is the widest cypress tree in the world and measures one hundred sixty-five feet in circumference. It is over 2000 years old.
Teotitlán: This Zapotec village is world famous for its weavings. The wool is hand-carded and on many occasions only natural dyes are used. Students can observe weavers who still employ traditional techniques to produce Zapotec designs in their woven rugs. Weather forecast |
