SPANISH AND HORSEBACK RIDING

Why Guadix ?

Guadix is situated in the province of Grenada, and offers a unique natural landscape, surrounded with incredible hills. The city is known for its wrens houses, its potteries, as well as for its historic and cultural past.

The stone, the limestone, the clay and the light make of Guadix a city of contrasts. Caves, historic districts and fertile valley are protected by the Arabic fortress, the cathedral and, by the Sierra Nevada.

We find whiteness of the snow in winter and the brightness of the stone there in summer. Phenician and Carthaginian were attracted by its mining wealth, then the Roman and Arabic converted it in shopping center of the region.
In Guadix we find the most important group of wrens houses of Spain, opened on clay hills. On the other hand, palaces and impressive streets show the greatness and the age of this city.

Its characteristic potteries which go back up to prehistoric cultures, give shape to jars richly decorated. Its "gachas in peppers " or the famous " tocino of cielo " invite us to enjoy its delicious gastronomy. Without to forget the popular holiday of Cascamorras, where a fascinated crowd accompanies this person who tries, in vain, to steal the image of the Virgo of the nearby village: Baza. With his return to Guadix, the villagers realizing his defeat, reprimand him austerely.

City information

grenade l'Alhambra

Granada is the capital of the Andalusian province of the same name located in the east of this area, in the south of Jaén. Its geographical diversity and its multiple landscapes characterize it: the coast with the hot climate; cultivations on the plain and of Génil; and mountainous areas with cold climate, where the peak of the highest peninsula is found, Mulhacén at 3.481 Mr. of altitude. The city is located at the bottom of the Nevada Sierra, with the junction of the Darro and Génil rivers . Thanks to its particular history, it was seen equipped with a great artistic richness which goes back to the Arab palaces and the architectonic jewels of the rebirth. The fact of having been the last Arab kingdom on the peninsula, granted a great symbolic value to it. The aspect of the city is determined by the hills on which were established the old workings, built in Albaicin and Alhambra, with the narrow and inclined streets, with beautiful recesses and surprising perspective. The new city is located on the plain, it's crossed by the large axes formed by Gran Iria de Colón and the Avenue of the Catholic Kings, and the lattice of the noisy streets around the Cathedral.grenade

The Moslems, who crossed the Straits of Gibraltar in 711, were established on what was a small wisigothe city, on the hill of Alambra. Once established, they erected the walls and built the foundations which were used for the development and the flourishing civilization which succeeded them. It was in IX century that Granada started to take importance, after the fall of the caliphate of Cordoba. Its splendor arrived in 1238, when Mohamed Ben Nasal founded the nazarite dynasty where the kingdom of Grenade extended from Gibraltar to Murcie. Its dynasty gave twenty kings until Boabdil, the Small one, had to deliver Grenade to Catholic Kings , in 1492. During these three centuries of splendid and rich Islamic culture had developed a legacy of architectonic works of an immense artistic value like that of Albambra which, with General life and I' Albaïcin, was declared by UNESCO " Inheritance of Humanity. The Pretty XVI century old cathedral includes a royal vault with the tombs of Ferdinand d' Aragon and Isabelle. The growth of the city continued after the conquest, encouraged by Catholic Kings who built new civil and religious buildings.
