City information

Chief town of department of the Southernmost Andes, the town of Cuzco to 3500 m of altitude, was the administrative and religious center vast INCA empire of the XI to the XVI century. In the center of the city where, on the principal place, were held many ceremonies, the splendid cathedral baroque and the church of Compania, built into 1668, rise on the old site of the Temple of Viracocha and an INCA palate. Faithful to its double heritage (INCA and colonial), Cuzco jointly celebrates the festival catholic God and the INCA festival of the sun. The area carries the traces of its last rich person INCA, ruins of Sacsahuamam and of Salamancu, celebrates INCA track which leads of Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu.

In language quechua, Cuzco means " navel ". Indeed, Incas regarded Cuzco as the navel of the world and had made their capital of it. The modern city is built on the old INCA city. In certain streets of the city, the ground floors of the dwellings are in enormous jointed stones characterizing INCA architecture.
To survey the narrow lanes of Cuzco is a real pleasure. The mixture of INCA architectures and colonial gives a kind particular to the city. You will be able to appreciate the Indian market close to the station. The peasants sleep on the spot not to lose their site. One can find there all food necessary to prepare the trek " Path of the INCA ". The fortress of Sacsahuaman, which formerly protected the town of Cuzco, is impressive. Built with enormous blocks of stone (some weigh several tens of tons), it overhangs the city (to 45 mn of functioning of Plaza de Armas).
